How to write a Golf Club History

Many golf clubs when nearing a significant anniversary decide to mark the occasion by publishing a history of their club. For some clubs they may be forunate to have had somone who far sightedly has anticipated the event and has ensured that important documents, competition results, and photographs have been kept safely. They have interviewed the oldest member and recorded his anedotes and memories. The club may be lucky to have someone of a literary bent who willingly volunteers to do the writing and has some experience of publishing. There is then the problem of how much the club history will cost to print, how many copies, and finally will the club's main committee approve the project.

However, too often there are few records, often having been destroyed in a clubhouse fire, and help is needed to find early accounts of the club, particularly how it was formed and the important early club personalities without whom the club would never have started.

These problems were addressed by John Pearson, a past Captain and currently editor of the British Golf Collectors quarterly journal "Through the Green", and Barry Leithhead of the Australian Golf Collectors’ Societies, who have jointly edited "Writing a Golf Club History".

How to Write a Golf Club History

The Australian Golf Heritage Society have produced in 2009 a survey which is felt would be helpful to any Club or County Union who are considering compiling a history of their Club or organisation. This is a checklist which would be the preparatory task before the actual writing commences. It is hoped that it will prove useful and should be read in addition to "How to Write a Golf Club History" available above.
