Introduction
Having somewhat foolishly volunteered to take over the running of the British Golf Collectors Society Website, I am now inthe process of making it more current. I have requested some of our gallant band of organisers to submit reports on the various matches, competitions, and events, which have been held. Any website like ours is dependent on reports and feedback and I would welcome this from all members.

Report of Midlands Meeting held on 19 August 2010
The Stratford on Avon Golf Club was the venue for the Midland Region Summer
Meeting on 19 August 2010. Our visit to Stratford on Avon during a Ryder
Cup year seemed most appropriate as we recalled an occasion 80 years ago
when the Club Captain, Samuel Ryder, arranged an exhibition match between
George Duncan, Alex Herd, Ted Ray and Abe Mitchell at the relatively new
course. The golf match was followed by a Complimentary Dinner at the Shakespeare
Hotel for George Duncan in appreciation of his Captaincy of the successful
Ryder Team the previous year at Moortown Golf Club. Sadly Samuel Ryder
was unable to attend these events due to illness.
The 27 Society Members present at this Midland event, who were competing
for the Walter Mechilli Trophy, were joined by 15 members of the host
club who were playing a separate competition. All competitors had the
option of playing with either hickory or modern clubs.
The afternoon produced some excellent golf with John Moreton and Bill
Druce both returning an extremely impressive score of 42 points with hickory
clubs. John Moreton was declared the winner of the trophy on a count back.
There was also a tie in the steels event between John Bradley and David
Moffat both scoring 39 points. John Bradley won on the count back.
The golf was followed by a most convivial meal comprising of three courses
from Samuel Ryder's original dinner.
David Sutton, the Club Captain, welcomed the Society to Stratford on Avon
and gave a short address outlining the Samuel Ryder connection with the
Club. John Weston, the Midlands Captain, responded on behalf of the Society.
Our visit conclued with an 'Antique Golf Roadshow' which included the
presentation of items associated with the Ryder Cup. The format of this
event was a change to our usual meeting and was well received by all present.
Special thanks to Hugh Begg for all his hard work in helping to arrange
this event.
Report by Keith Bilbie, Midlands Organiser.

This is an unusual request but would the Welsh lady who left a message
on Hamish Ewan's answering machine contact him again as the number she
left does not ring out. She was interested in speaking to any members
who had knowledge of the Ryder Cup. Hamish's telephone number is 01463

CENTENARY MATCH AT CIRENCESTER GOLF CLUB - 4 JULY 2010
Some of the older members will recall that they played in a Centenary
match at Cirencester in 1983, so why another one? The first match commemorated
the founding of Sapperton Park Golf Club 1n 1893, the predecessor of Cirencester
Golf Club, but the club was renamed and relocated to its present site
in 1910, hence the latest meeting.
To enable as many Cirencester members as possible to play, we followed
the format that we had used at Abergele, in which one BGCS member was
teamed up with three Cirencester members, and the competition was played
on a team basis. The home club had expressed an interest in playing with
hickories, and so we took along spare clubs and managed to encourage a
fair number to play with them.
The weather looked threatening but, apart from a slight flurry of rain
- which only lasted ten minutes - we had a dry, bright, if windy day,
all of which made for an interesting and enjoyable afternoon.
An excellent dinner, with a string ensemble accompanying the meal, was
followed by an Antiques Road Show, conducted by Alan Jackson, with help
from Tony Gatrell.
A good day, at which we renewed some old acquaintances and made some new
ones.

Dutch International Hickory Championship 2010
On Saturday 2nd of October 2010 the first Dutch hickory Championship will
be played at the unique historic golf course, landgoed Ullerberg. The
course was recently featured in the magazine"Golf Architecture" , the
following text is an excerpt from the article.
"De Ullerberg makes no preference to being a highly polished course.
It is, however, probably the only course in the world where the fairway
playing surface is pure heather. " "Although the length of de Ullerberg
falls well short of today's course standards, it still plays as a long
one does. As you can imagine this is due to the heather fairways which
don't yield much roll to the golf ball. Moreover, the firmness of the
greens makes the layout challenging as lengthy approaches struggle to
'hold' the surfaces. Good scoring, therefore, inevitably comes down to
clever positioning from the tee, and finesse in the approach game."
The championship's field will be limited to 40 players and is open to
professionals and amateurs (men and women). There will be both scratch
and handicap categories. The championship is being organised by Iain Forrester
together with Ullerberg professional/manager Bob Hesselmann, the championship
immediately follows the EAGHC autumn meeting which is being held at the
Kennemer GC (also in the Netherlands)
The programe for the Championship will be:-
2nd October 2010
Morning, Chance to get to know the course (until 12.00)
12.00 Lunch
13.30 First tee time
18.00 drink and prize giving

Match vs The MacKenzie Society, at Cavendish G C. -
Buxton - 2nd July 2010
Members
have enjoyed playing many courses in excellent condition this season,
and the preparation of the small contoured greens and running fairways
at Cavendish for our third encounter with the MacKenzie Society resulted
in a first class match. With hickories optional, the majority of the members
chose to play with modern clubs - not so Neil Hutchinson and John Pearson.
They met their match against a strong MacKenzie pairing, and the majority
of other matches went against us, leading to a 5 ½ to 2 ½ margin
for the MacKenzie Society.
Nick Leefe (in light suit) with Richard Jeffs and Captain Richard Atherton
Nick Leefe, the moving spirit behind the creation of the MacKenzie Society
in 1999, proposed a continuation of these matches, a suggestion
which was supported with enthusiasm. If only we could rely on the Buxton
weather to be as congenial as this year! Report

Midland Region 2010 Spring Meeting Report
Whittington Heath Golf Club on the outskirts of Lichfield was the venue
for the Midland Region Spring Meeting on Friday the 27 June 2010.
The original nine holes of this heathland golf course were laid out in
1886 on land that had been used previously for horse racing and in 1927
the renown course designer, H S Colt re-designed the original course and
then extended it to the excellent 18 hole course enjoyed by golfers today.
Our previous visit to Whittington in 2009 had to be abandoned due to heavy
rain and a flooded course but this year we enjoyed a sunny day and a course
with fast running fairways and true greens - this was Whittington Heath
at it's best.

John
Weston Midlands Region Captain presents the winner's & runners up

The golf was followed by a convivial dinner and the presentation of prizes
by John Weston, the Midlands Captain. Keith Bilbie, the event organiser,
scored 37 points to win the first prize with Ian Douglas runner up with
a score of 35 points. The Hickory Prize was won by Alan Jackson scoring
31 points and the Guest Prize was won by Reg Walker, the Captain of Whittington
Heath, with a score of 35 points making full use of his local knowledge.

Match v Inverallochy Golf Club and Duff House Royal
Hickory Scramble
25th & 26th June 2010
On a lovely warm summer afternoon eleven members of the Society and one
guest were welcomed at Inverallochy Golf Club by George Ritchie the Captain.
Six four balls were played with members of the Society playing with hickories
and using the new additional strokes to their handicap as decided at the
last Committee meeting. As they say the proof of the pudding is in the
eating but in this case the playing and, despite losing by 3 holes overall,
every match finished either one up or down or square - congratulations
to the Committee on a wise decision. After the match we were treated to
an excellent meal topped off by 'funcy pieces' with the promise of another
match being looked forward to in two years time.
On the Saturday eight of us played in two teams in Duff House Royal Golf
Club's Centenary Hickory Texas Scramble with both teams performing very
well with the team of Harry Bowden, Ian Nalder, Ron Beatt and myself finishing
as Runners-up. Bob Strachan, who is the past Pro. at Duff House played
in his own team later in the day but with little success. However he kindly
lent the club some of his memorabilia for display over the following week
which went down very well.

ENGLAND HICKORY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The
Central England Hickory Championships were held at the Coxmoor Golf Club,
Nottinghamshire on Monday 24 May 2010 As usual Coxmoor provided at challenging
course for these championships with running fairways and tricky greens

the John O'Gaunt Golf Club on a count back.
The Championship Trophy was presented to Bill by Doreen Hartley,Tony's

Royal Wimbledon Hickory Match
We are having a hickory event at Royal Wimbledon on 30th
May Sunday. The format is lunch, which will involve much good food and
chat, followed by 18 holes of golf with hickories against the RWGC bogey
of 75. I have issued an invitation to the Royal Wimbledon G.C. members
to play and have been somewhat too successful and am now trying to find
a few more members of the British Golf Collectors Society to play. Please
let me know if you would like to play. If you can play we would live to
see you. If you can play and bring a spare set of hickories to lend to
the locals who do not have clubs - even better. The big attraction of
the day is that I have persuaded the secretary of RWGC to put on display
their collection of very old clubs (which are normally hidden under lock
and key and have not been seen for years)

Report on SPRING MEETING AT EDZELL GOLF CLUB
On
a bright but cold May morning some 18 members set out to try and tame
Edzell golf course with hickories - alas many failed miserably with only
one or two managing to extract a reasonable score but more of that later.
We were delighted to be joined by three Swedish members in Owe Werner,
Patric Andersson and Stefan Ackerwall which along with Ron and Bev Archer
made up an international force to be reckoned with. First timers Arthur
and Robin Morris along with Bill Mitchell were very welcome along with
the usual motley crew which grace our meetings. John Pearson and Chris
Homer had travelled from the deep South before the SNP shut the Borders
to keep the Tories out - I trust that they managed to sneak back. Chris
coming, of course, to defend the Harry Bowden Quaich which he won
last year.
The
day stayed mainly dry with only two hale showers - no snow despite what
some thought - so we all got round more or less dry. The "Must try harder
next time" was won by the trophy presenter, Harry Bowden, who has little
hope of winning it unless he improves greatly. Nearest the pin prizes
went to Patric Andersson and Ron Archer but that was almost as far as
the international challenge went, although Patric finished in 4th spot
with 29 pts and declared himself International Champion. Chris Homer made
a valiant attempt at trying to retain the trophy with 30 pts, John Still
had an excellent 32 pts but winner on the day with 34 pts was Willie Tanner
- well done.
The others made up of myself, Ron Beatt, Bob Strachan, Ian Hislop and
Scott Patrick will just have to content ourselves with the fact that it
was " a tolerable day, a tolerable green and more than tolerable company"
and try to play better next year. The next Meeting is at Boat of Garten
in October and the entry form will be enclosed with the next issue of
the magazine and we look forward to seeing you there. A copy of the entry
form may be downloaded from the Fixture List
page of this website.

President' Day and Annual General Meeting 30th April 2010
A full and official report of our President's
Day and Annual General Meeting will be published in the June edition of
Through the Green but in the
meantime some quick observations and remarks
about the day. Weatherwise, it was reasonable with drizzly conditions
to start which slowly improved as we got into the afternoon. Attendance
was down somewhat from previous years with around fifty playing in the
afternoon and seventy including guests sitting down to an excellent dinner.
The ladies' pairing of Liz Macdonald and Ros Weston taking the honours
for the John Behrend Shields.
At the AGM the 2009 Treasurer, David Moffat reported that the Society's
financial position was very healthy but expressed concern on two issues.
The first being that the age profile of the Society was steadily rising
and secondly that the attendance at our National functions was in decline.
Our retiring Captain Dr David Hamilton made his final report and gave
a resume of his second year in office. He reported to great acclaim that
during his various visits to continental Europe, at the Prague meeting,
Jean, his lady wife, had won the Czech Ladies Hickory Championship. He
reported that one growth area was the popularity of Hickory golf on the
continent, particularly in Scandinavia when the Grail weekend coupled
with two further meeting were very well attended. There is the probability
that in future years there could be a European Hickory Tour. David thanked
the Committee members for their support during his two years in office
and in particular David Kirkwood for all his hard work in arranging the
Grail match against the USA in which Europe was victorious.
At the end of his report David proposed that as David Moffat was standing
down as our Treaurer that he be made an Honorary Life Member which was
received with acclaim by the membership present.
Much to your present scribe's total embarassment, John Pearson proposed
that Dick Durran was also made an Honorary Life Member for past services
rendered to the Society. This proposal was also approved nem con.
Dr David Hamilton then proposed Richard Atherton to be our new Captain
for 2010 & 2011 which was received with acclaim with Richard making
a short and humourous acceptance speech.
With David Moffat's retirement as Treasurer we are lucky to have someone
like John Still with his financial skills to take over this responsible
office, particularly as he has been for some years our Honorary Auditor.
The re-election of Bob Fletcher as Secretary, and David Kirkwood and John
Mullock was voted en block, and again we are fortunate to have three such
experienced members willing to serve our Society.
With the appointment of John Still as Honorary Treasurer, a vacancy was
created for Honorary Auditor and past-Captain Peter Heath was "volunteered"
to fill this important post.
Royal Liverpool Golf Club provided the gathering with both
an excellent lunch and dinner during which our President spoke with his
accustomed grace and humour and thanked the Club for its hospitality and
commended it on the excellent way the course had been presented. Arthur
Noble, the Royal Liverpool Captain, replied on behalf of the Club with
humourous references to the world of golf collectibles.
After the prizes were awarded the President's Charity Auction took place
under the genial auctioneering style of David Kirkwood with the able assistance
of Ron Beatt and Archie Baird. Mention here should be made of the number
of auction lots that were generously donated by the members for which
all the proceeds went directly to "Camp & Trek" the chosen charity,
especially Shirley Kay who gave her late husband Barry's set of hickories
and leather bag which realised £205.
The evening ended with much convivial gossip and conversation with no
doubt a few private deals being struck.

Norfolk Fixtures
Gentlemen & Ladies
I am sorry not to be joining you at Hoylake on the 30th April but hope
the weather and course are kind and you have a very good day. I have had
an encouraging start to getting players for the two fixtures in Norfolk
in June but still need some more players. This is the first time we have
been able to have back-to-back matches at Hunstanton and the legendary
Royal West Norfolk Golf Club at Brancaster. For those of you who haven't
sampled Brancaster it is built on a spit of sand which becomes an Island
at high tide (excepting access via a causeway). Great golf
If initially you could indicate your availability I will follow up with
accomodation recommendations. My two September fixtures will be published
in the next Through The Green but here are advanced details Royal Worlington
will host an A.M. match and a strokeplay competition after lunch Bishops
Stortford which is 20 miles south near Stanstead Airport is a Centenary
Fixture If you could indicate you're availability for these fixtures,
as well, it would be greatly appreciated as, in particular, Bishops Stortford
are keen to play with Hickories and are obviously up for an entertaining
day If you are provisionally available then please indicate this as well

Welsh Weekend
As has happened over the last few years, the first hickory event of
2010 was our annual match against Machynlleth Golf Club on Friday, 19th
March. The members there had pulled out all the stops, had had new ceilings
fitted (owing to burst pipes during the winter), new carpets had arrived
the day before and we were given the warmest of welcomes. The course was
in great condition, especially the greens, having been protected by snow
for an unusually long time, and the sun shone for nine holes. Rain caught
the later players, but a most enjoyable day was had by all, both sides
fielding equal numbers, the BGCS team including Jonas Fack from Sweden
and Mike Beckerich from the USA. However, local knowledge prevailed narrowly,
and a convivial supper rounded off the evening.
Saturday dawned wet and drizzly, but by mid-day the skies had cleared
just in time for the start of our match against Aberdovey. A brisk, bitingly
cold breeze added to the challenge and the home team managed a four-hole-up
victory over eleven foursomes matches. Six Aberdovey members had opted
to try out hickory clubs and were delighted to play beyond their expectations.
After a cheerful dinner BGCS President, Philip Truett, gave an amusing
account of the results and also presented the Club with three old Aberdovey
score cards, very few of which still exist, dating from the 1930s, 1960s
and 1980s. David Hamilton graciously presented the Darwin Trophy to John
Barker, Captain of Aberdovey, and both spoke warmly of the continuing
relationship between the Society and the Club. Gwyn James rounded off
the evening in traditional manner, with three Welsh songs.

Nigel
Notley winner of scratch medal Our
President, Philip, Welsh Hickory Champion 2010
The sun shone on Sunday for the Welsh Hickory Championship:
there was plenty of run on the fairways, some wind, quite fast greens
and very punishing bunkers. 79 gross was an extremely good score from
Nigel Notley to win the Scratch Medal, with Ian Hislop close behind on
80. Philip Truett followed his Scottish triumph with his first ever Welsh
Championship win, scoring 37 points, four ahead of his nearest rival.
He received the trophy, donated by Peter Burles (a founder member of the
Society), from Peter's widow, Peggy, who also competes regularly in this
championship.
Next year's Welsh Weekend will be on 8th, 9th and 10th April 2011.

DEATH OF Michael Smith
It is with much regret that we announce the death of Mr
Michael Smith, who joined the BGCS in 2005. He was Captain of the Royal
Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club in 2006. Michael died on Monday 18th
January 2010 at home after a short fight with cancer. His death came as
a complete shock as he had played in the English Hickory at Rye in October
and was in very good heart and looked very well
A Thanksgiving Service will be held at St James Church, Castle Acre at
3 pm on Wednesday 3rd February 2010. A big turn out is expected from his
many friends at Worlington but I know that any of his BGCS friends will
be very welcome. I believe there is to be a private burial prior the Thanksgiving
service. I will certainly be attending as his friend, and also representing
Worlington, but I will also fly the Flag for the BGCS for any of you who
cannot attend, as Castle Acre isn't very accessible.
For those unable to attend the service but would like to
make a donation in memory of Michael, these should be sent to Swaffham
& Litcham Hospice, c/o Chapmans Funeral Service, The Swaffham Funeral
Home, Lynn Road, Swaffham, Norfolk PE37 7AY.

Enquiry
We have had a query from an American lady, Debra Cohen
Tudor, regarding two ancestors of her husband. Does anyone have any information
on Norman A.L. Cockell, who played in the 1904 Amateur Championship held
at Sandwich. We know he was beaten 3 & 2 by W.W. Burton from Ekwanok
County G.C.& that his club is listed as Eltham.
The second is Elliott McRae Cockell, the son of the above,
who apparently wrote or contributed to Golf Illustrated in 1929.
