How to write a Golf Club History BGCS Merchandise

Through the GreenThrough The Green (TTG) is the Magazine of the British Golf Collectors' Society INTRODUCTION It has been said that the Society's magazine Through the Green is the cement that binds the British Golf Collectors' Society members together. The fact that almost a third of our membership is comprised of lovers of the history, heritage, and traditions of golf from parts of the world, outside Great Britain confirms this statement. The magazine has become a useful source of reference material for golf historians carrying out research on all forms of collectables, golfing personalities, golfing history, and rules of golf. It is particularly useful for those engaged in writing their own golf club's history. As Alan Jackson originally wrote in his Foreword to this part of the website : "For some time now members have suggested that an index of articles which have appeared in Through The Green would be welcome. As Editor, I have frequently wondered whether an article I was contemplating had appeared before, and on one occasion it had. So as much for the Editor's benefit as for the Members' " ... He also said : "In the early days TTG was very much of a newsletter and there were few articles, as we would define them. This meant there have been many "snippets", some recordable and others not. Then there have been our regular Letter from America "scribes",whose contributions have been invaluable, Joe Murdoch, Leo Kelly, Pete Georgiady, and Dan Bagdade. Their pieces have always been immensely readable but not necessarily categorisable. And, of course, one of the pillars of TTG - Dick Durran. I suppose I could have listed every book he has reviewed but then we would have run out of paper. Suffice it to say that although these gentlemen's names do not necessarily appear in the index, their efforts on our behalf have been immense, and I would only say that their articles are well worth a second read. ......" The final point he made is as true now as it was then in 2001 : "Finally, a word of thanks to all contributors. Without your interest and efforts we would not have a magazine." Then, as now, the Editor of Through the Green has the very great resource to call upon from within our membership, of world-wide expertise in all aspects of the glorious heritage of golf. Those interested in reading Alan Jackson's original foreword and index can read it by clicking here. INDEXES In 2008, the Society decided to engage professional help to compile a comprehensive index of the magazine's contents that built on the pioneering work of Alan Jackson in 2001. With the December 2008 edition of TTG was included, in hard copy format, the index of all articles from the magazine's inception up to September 2008. By January 2009, the mammoth task of scanning every page of every issue of TTG from 1987 to December 2008 was completed and it ws decided that these would be freely available to all readers of this website. More recent issues will be added after an interval of twelve months following publication. There are two indexes :- One is a Comprehensive Index covering collecting topics, personalities, book titles, authors of articles and books et al. The second is an Index of Books reviewed by various members or mentioned in an article. The indexing is by book title followed by the author and the month and year of the edition. The Society is not responsible for the views expressed by the reviewers. The scans of each issue of TTG are in Adobe Acrobat format and you can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader V. 9.0 by clicking here Regrettably, for the time being, a direct link between the Indexes and the individual pages of the scanned copies of TTG is not yet possible. This will require further financial investment, professional expertise and effort. Therefore, any reader who wants to carry out a search for a particular topic of interest can for either index : Select the Initial letter of the topic he/she wishes search for Scoll down the page to the topic required Note the page number(s) Click on the link Scroll down to the required page To return please use your browser back arrow. Readers are reminded that both the written content and images in Through the Green are subject to the copyright laws. This is particularly important with respect to institutional copyright holders, such as the R&A, USGA, university libraries, and national libraries, museums and galleries. To just browse any copy of TTG click on the link below and choose the particular month and year of issue. Scanned copies of "Through the Green" The scanned copies of TTG are in Adobe Acrobat Format and the quality of the scans of the earlier editions leaves something to be desired. It is hoped that better quality scans will be produced in the near future. To view the scans click here and then click on the particular issue which are tabled by month and year of issue. *** John Pearson is the current editor and can be reached by email at editor@golfcollectors.co.uk
